Rainfall map for Ontario summer 2009
It’s been a remarkable summer of rainfall. I find it amazing that we’ve now had two wet summers in a row – especially with all this rain coming after the driest summer in 50 years. (During the terrible drought of 2007, I certainly felt like moving into a condo, and giving up gardening for good!)
This rainfall map from Agriculture Canada tells the story. In that dark blue area around Lake Ontario is a little brown spot of record wet (which you can’t really see from the size of the picture), and that’s where we are.
Have there been downsides to the wet season? Sure: I have had to do too much mowing – every four days or so – and conditions have been perfect for all sorts of fungal diseases. Blights have hit vegetable garden crops like tomatoes and potatoes. My three tomato vines just didn’t grow. It was too wet and also too cool, especially the night time temperatures.
But after a decade of droughts and the horrendous summer of 2007, I dare not complain about the rain.
