The red-winged blackbirds are telling me that spring is right on track. I had predicted that they would be back around March 12, and today on my golf course walk with the dogs I heard them for the first time this year. Last year they came back little early on March 10, and the year before on March 12. I can almost set the spring clock by their arrival.
You know that cliché “my heart leapt”, well, that’s exactly how I felt when I heard the blackbirds calling and saw them on the cattails at a pond in the middle of the golf course.
if you haven’t heard or seen red-winged blackbirds yet, or if you don’t have them where you live, this bird site has lots of good information about them and a recording of their call.

Yes, I saw the first one here Monday and flocks of swans too. And the temps – yesterday we had 16 degrees c! All the snow has melted here now in just a few days. It feels like spring, I could easily be fooled.

I know exactly what you mean Yvonne. It’s different down here in the south. I haven’t found that bird that will make my heart leap when I hear it for the first time of the year…yet. But I think it won’t be long.
Ahh…that is one of the things I miss most about living in the country…one of my absolute favorite bird songs.
