cropcricket.com logoThree local gardening enthusiasts have launched a cool new site to help Canadian gardeners find homes for extra plants, and buy, sell or swap garden stuff. Called CropCricket.com, the site’s mission is to help gardeners connect with fellow green thumbs.

I sure could have used this service last fall when I was looking for homes for our big agapathus plants, which were getting a bit too large to be dragged into the basement for overwintering. I managed to find homes for four of them, and I convinced my husband to keep the rest for one more season.

CropCricket.com is the creation of local gardening guys – Ross Dodgson, of Grimsby, his brother Mark, who lives in Ancaster, and their friend John Wilson, of Stoney Creek. The three amigos launched their site at the RBG Garden Show a couple of weeks ago, and now say they were caught off guard by the incredible response the site has garnered in its first couple of weeks.

Their home page now states: “We have found the need to quickly regionalize it. This means that by Friday May 7th, 2010, you will be presented with a screen to choose your region. This will allow you to buy, sell and trade with the people in your specific community.”

CropCricket.com is free to users, who can post, edit, delete and archive their ads. Best of all, if you create a listing offering daylilies for sale or a post about “gardening help wanted” this season, you can archive it to use when you’re splitting your perennials or looking for help again next year.

I wish the guys good luck. Their site sure sounds like an idea whose time has come. It’s easy and free to register and get started. I just did it myself.

We noticed these guys, too, earlier this week at the Toronto Botanical Garden. Clever fellows. I wish them well.

Thanks, Yvonne
I have been so busy outside that I haven’t looked at the site yet. Their business card is still on the counter. Better get it done – sounds like a great initiative.

I found your blog several weeks ago and I really enjoy it, your website too.
