Don’t you just hate when the gardening season starts out like this? After a dry winter, we get a dry spring – at least so far. We’ve just come out of four weeks without a decent rainfall.
Our crab-apple trees are in full bloom right now, as is the eastern redbud. The serviceberry, ornamental pear and magnolia blossoms have come and gone. We are about a week-and-half to two weeks ahead of schedule this spring, but it has been a magnificent show. The early heat brought on the flowers ahead of schedule, and the cooler weather that followed kept them going for a nice, long time, particularly the daffodils. Luckily, frost hasn’t been an issue since the crab-apples started to open this week Last spring, their blossoms were done in by a hard frost.
I did a double take last Tuesday (April 27th) when I saw that the barn swallows were back. It seemed to me that they were early, but not so: in spring 2008, we had them by April 20th.

Hi Yvonne,
Your crab-apple trees are stunning. Our serviceberry just started to bloom this week.
Thunder showers here tonight too, but they were not all that gentle.
Lene
It must be colder by the lake where you are for the serviceberry to come into bloom so late. We were lucky that we got thundershowers and not a severe thunderstorm.
